A pop of green... or four - St. Paddy's Day!

Time to Wear the Green, it's St. Patrick's Day!

Hong Kong had its first St. Patrick's festival over the weekend, and it's inspired me to share the love for green - an oddly strange choice of color that actually works on desserts.

What's St. Paddy's day without some chocolate and beer?
> Guinness Chocolate Cake
> Death by Chocolate
> Chocolate Pistachio Torte
> Deep Chocolate Ganache Cake
> Darkside Chocolate Cupcake

Reds, pinks, yellows, browns and oranges are naturals with cakes, they bring cheer and brighten desserts immediately.

Blues and peaches fall into my "hmm" category. Blue has been officially named the worst color to have in foods (not my words, it's those tests out there they've carried out!) - off-putting and not quite appealing. Peach is just kinda ho-hum to me, not much personality.

Greens and blacks are in that sweet spot: done right, they'll add pizzaz. Done wrong - and they'll look radioactive or depressed.

Color your treats:
> Color me happy!
> The colorful Robin Williams
> A summer carousel

So let's hustle up some green - good for the eyes, good for nutrition - just like veggies are ;) and get our green on!

Green Tea & White Chocolate Cookies

Green tea's a natural when you're talking green in desserts. They're more predominant in Asian desserts like chiffon cakes, and I used mine in bite-sized cookie poppers. The great thing about green tea bakes is they tend not to be overly sweet because of their natural bitter edge from the tea flavors, and have so much character so you don't want to drown them in sugar.

Minecraft Cake

Making cakes for kids often makes me the 'hip one' because they want their cakes in all the latest game and toys characters, and I rely on them to bring me up to speed on the hottest. I can say with 'authority' (ahem!) that Minecraft is in with the kids now, and I had so much fun building this cake for an 8 year old's birthday.

I made the mistake of using the paint technique for the mosaic tiles - making long slabs of fondant, scoring them and hand-painting each square a different shade of green. It seemed a good idea when I researched the techniques, but this only works for much, much smaller cakes when just a couple of squares are painted. It takes all day to paint a cake this big, takes ages to dry and the long fondant panels break easily. So I was really better off making each individual mosaic square in different shades greens.

You learn, and you learn to laugh about it - about many deranged hours ;)

Cartoons, characters and toys:
> Invasion of the Minions
> Who's Henry Hugglemonster?
> Elmo cake pops
> Rilakkuma cake pops

Lime Top Cupcake

I like contrasting colors so they don't all scream for attention, and this red velvet cupcake goes just beautifully with the pale green buttercream frosting. The colors were perfect for the Christmas season when I made them, and you should get creative and experiment with different flavors for the buttercream. We eat with our eyes as much as our tongue, so go with flavors associated with green - like mint, lime, basil, green tea - and they'll match visually.

Kermit-toned Cake Pops

Cake Pops are a ton of fun, you can pretty much do anything you want with swirls and designs, and something about little desserts on sticks makes them just irresistible. My cake pop idol Bakerella does an amazing job creating the most unexpected itty bitty balls of fun perched precariously on rainbow hued straws and sticks, she's da bomb.

Cake pop fun:

Happy St. Patrick's day, remember to load up on 'em greens!

Halloween companions

Most people enjoy a good hair-raising scare.

Which is why Halloween is so popular, and heart-splitting horror movies get more freaky each year.

There are a few however, who like hanging out with humans more than with ghouls. Those who get chills when the window shutters flap about for no reason.

Like me.

So instead of disguising myself as Frozen's Anna or a sexy vamp bunny wannabe, and getting my wits scared out in a devil's mansion, I've rounded up a couple of desserts to snuggle up to on Halloween night, when the clock strikes 12.

Till Death Do Us Part

Adios and Ciao Ciao, part of the cultishly popular Tokidoki series, are condemned to wander the earth after 500 years in hell. Could there be a more perfect Halloween dessert??
> Get the recipe for Martha Stewart's perfect chocolate cake.

More night-friendly cakes:

Darkside Chocolate

Chocolate works really well for a night snack. Maybe cuz it's forbidden (says all the healthy folks!), or maybe it's the midnight darkness of the cacao that lures. Either way, this chocolate cupcake topped with dark chocolate ganache, is a definite walk on the dark side.

Death by chocolate, anyone?

More darkside desserts:

Nighttime Ice-Cream

I-C-E  C-R-E-A-M cravings. They hit at midnight, and they hit hard. If like me, you're not about to venture out into the darkness of Halloween night even for ice cream, you gotta do the next best thing - ice cream cake pops.

You could do ice-cream cone style, like Bakerella's. I had ice cream sticks lying around, so I did the popsicle version. Pretty much the same way you make all your other cake pops - just make sure the cake pop adheres well to the ice cream stick when inserting, press the pop around the base in a little if you need to.

> What are cake pops?
> Making basic cake pops
> So-darn-good Rum Balls
> Ride away Bicycle Pops

Deep Dark Double Chocolate Trouble

Wash them down with milk. Or good coffee. Or a smoothie. That's how you need to eat these little devils. This soft-baked cookie is so decadently good, you'll be fighting demons to stop at one. Their cracked tops erupt into soft chocolately chews, and these are made extra large - for double the evil indulgence.

Not enough cookies?

Embrace your midnight companions and eat up, welcome to the dark side!

Taste of home

Happy Labor Day!

I kinda think it's a pseudo mother's day in disguise.
> More Mother's Day treats

Besides being in labor for a good many hours to bring us into the world, moms constantly labor over their children - feeding, schooling, nurturing, dressing, fussing over.

A lifelong stint.
No return policy :)

And for this reason, home truly is where mom is.

Moms have a magical power (also known as 'sheer love') to create warmth, and we've 2 desserts that are the quintessential taste of home.

Sesame Matcha Cupcakes

This is such a warm, earthy cupcake that pairs
perfectly with a very grown-up matcha frosting.

The slightly bitter edge from the sesame seeds
keeps each mouthful light, and fills you with the
warmth of home, especially on a cold rainy day.

Recipe from 6bittersweets here. I prefer a slightly
stronger sesame taste, and upped the amount of seeds
to nearly half cup; you can always adjust as you like it.

Toast the sesame for 3-5 min in a dry pan to release
the oils and flavors, then give it a blitz in the food
processor or mortar and pestle. The toasting brings
out the most amazing aromas.

Resist temptation to gobble seeds up; you'll either
burn your tongue from the heat, or be left
short of seeds for your cupcakes.

Either way, it doesn't end well!

The smell of pastries fresh out of the oven is heavenly.
My favorite time to take a bite or two out of the bakes -
when they're barely cool enough to hold!

The key is to get good sesame. The black seeds
have a stronger aroma, and look gorgeous
coloring the cupcakes a milky ash.

To complete the look, save some
of the toasted seeds to sprinkle on top.

Zingy Ginger Crunch

Ginger is a flavor that I only grew to appreciate
in my early adulthood. It used to be 'that
weird yellow spice' in stir frys and steamed
dishes, but I've since since learnt the error of my ways.

It's a magical elixir that gives a dessert an
extra taste dimension, and lifts warm drinks
 from the ordinary to extraordinary.

This recipe is from Taste.com, and the baked crunchy
base is a superb counterbalance to the ginger
layer that would otherwise be too sweet on its own.

I like to serve these in little cubes. They pack
quite a punch, and go blissfully with green tea.

 More homey desserts:
> Fruity chiffon cake
> Sweet, sweet strawberries
> Double chocolate chip shortbread
> Rich red velvet cake
> Ombre swirl cookies

Bee-do, bee-do, get ready for some Minion cuteness!

They were never meant to be such a big part of the movie, creators thought they'd be a fun little something-on-the-side for a bit of a laugh.

But their indecipherable babble and staccato tottle and skips were so endearing, they upstaged the stars and will now have their own movie.

Bellooooo Minions!
That's 'Helloooo Minions' for you.

Yes, Minion-ese apparently exists, a language with Spanish, Italian, Korean, Japanese and Filipino influences created by the Despicable Me director.

Yellow fever hit everywhere (I'm guilty of a certain banana-song ringtone!), and these highly excitable creatures with very little self-control were in hot demand - even as desserts.

Read about:
> Another yellow birthday: A day at the construction site
> Another fidgety creature that can't sit still: Bunnies!

Cupcakes are a great backdrop for the Minions, you could create different personalities for each.

The gang waiting to surprise Karlye!

Before they got to Karlye, these 4cm tall tic-tacs-on-steroids had to
spend some time in the workshop dressing up and getting some eyeballs

Running amok uncontrollably, as they do in real life

Kevin - impulsively (as all minions are) overtaken
by the Saturday Night Fever

Dave (right) - slightly appalled that he has to
stand next to Stuart in that green frock

What's a minion got to do to get that banana??

Poopaye = Goodbye, an apt farewell gift for a wild Minion fan

Couldn't resist finishing off with the adorable Minion bubble wand
I spotted at the party favor shop next to my physiotherapist's office

Another little boy was celebrating his birthday with the Minions, and this time I went with some cheeky 2D faces:

Minion - deconstructed

Fun fact: Minions love bananas and apples, and the mere
sight of either of these fruits can cause complete chaos.
Low maintenance friends, what's not to like? ;

The birthday boy in the background, grinning as widely as his minions!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

One of the best thing about kids' characters and books are the eye-poppin' colors.

I love the splashes of fun and the cheery bright hues.
No excuses, no space at all for the blues. (ooh, that rhymes!)

Check out more cheery day bakes:

Anyone who's spent half a day with a toddler would be well acquainted with The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

He chews and chomps his way through an impressive 10 different foods, teaching kids about numbers and the days of the week.

        More kids' fun:
       > Hello there, Kitty!

So when the request came for a Hungry Caterpillar cake, I jumped at the chance.

And the caterpillar's long segmented body was perfect for a wavy line of cake pops.

Double Fun!

I begin with the fun parts (always!): cheery slices of
chocolate cake, apple, watermelon, strawberry, muffin, pear,
ice-cream and of course - a lollipop.

All with their signature holes.

Phew, that Caterpillar can put it away!

While the fondant pieces set,
I get the red velvet cake started

After 45 min in the oven, the batter loses its
bright red for a coat of rusty chocolate -
red velvet's signature color

Caterpillar's food meets red velvet cake - happiness.

Guess what these are?

Bingo - cupcake toppers! Can never get
enough ice-cream. especially ON a cupcake.Thrilled to
find matching cupcake liners with ice-cream prints all over.

Sitting pretty in summer Caterpillar colors

All ready to meet the birthday boy's friends

Can't wait for my 11 month-old nephew to be old enough to meet the Hungry Caterpillar. They're both tubby and cheery, I'm sure they'll hit it off.

Get on daddy's sweet side!

It's a myth that women like desserts more.

According to our highly-reliable in-house research done in the Petite Pops kitchen, men have that same secret dessert compartment in their stomachs.

They may scoff at us girls. But really, they have a space for dessert. Even after a full meal.

That mysterious kangaroo dessert pouch exists.
Even for men.
Especially after they become daddies.

So get on daddy's sweet side with our Father's Day bakes, leave the neckties and tool kits to the rest of them.

I love birthdays!

Next to Christmas, they're my favorite celebrations.

They're your day, with your name on it (even the cake message says so).

Everyone's extra sweet, you're queen/king of the day.

There's a legitimate reason for you to eat, drink and be extra merry, and push the food guilt all away till the celebrations die down.

More birthday celebrations:
> A very lovely elephant day
> 10 years young
> Hole in one, anybody?
> Petite Pops goes to the zoo... dinosaur roarrr!

You probably share your birthday with 10 dozen people round the globe. BUT as long as those 10 dozen birthday babies stay well across the globe and far out of reach from my birthday treats - I can live with that :)

This birthday request was spur of the moment, for an office celebration of the boss' 40th.

I thought it'd be nice to make it extra rich and decadent, and paired the 4-0 cupcakes with rich, chocolately cake balls.

Started off with a sea of scrumptious red velvet
cuppies... impossible to walk away from, I tell you.

The right corner cupcake's missing, found it's way
into my stomach (taste test!), the empty spot
conveniently cropped out of the picture.

Each of the survivors got their own crown of
strawberry buttercream, topped with gold rocks

The chocolate cake balls - dipped in a layer of bitter chocolate,
topped with a teeny bit of green sprinkles for color and sparkle

Happy 40th birthday!

Psst... a Mother's Day secret... licking beaters!

Be adventurous, be bold!
Ok, but we really don't want to see what happens when you lick those beaters if mommy forgets to turn them off.

Take all that danger out of Mother's Day (yes you, find another way to live life on the edge), and let Petite Pops do the baking for you ... uh-huh, we do love getting our hands dirty.

> Click above mailer for clearer pop up

Cake Pops are a lot of fun - pop it, bite it, trash the stick. Easy as that. We can play with colors and designs for something that fits mommy.

If you're looking for rustic bakes, the Chocolate Berry Cake & Key Lime Pie should hit the spot. Nekkid, yummy. That's all you need.

Cupcakes are awesome for a party. Everyone grabs one, problem solved. *dust hands, stand back, enjoy!*

It's always nice to bring a smile and remind people around us they're loved.
Make sunshine, and be safe this Mother's Day!

Crimson splash: Red Santa Hats

Christmas is over, I know...  But there are a few good reasons why these cute little cupcakes are here.

Firstly, it's my delusional way of extending my favorite holiday, and making it last just a little longer :)

Secondly - there's always time for red velvet.

Lastly, the Lunar New Year is coming up, and red is just the color for untold wealth and prosperity ... so they say.
> Looking for something different this Lunar New Year?
> Dong Dong Chiang
> How to share a good pineapple tart
> Hello world, it's 2013!

So it's really just the right time to write about these adorable little Christmas head-toppers.

I think the magic is in the simplicity.

Nothing mind-boggling, nothing earth-shattering.
Just good ol' fashioned adorable.

Blood-red strawberries....

... perched on crimson red velvet

Their combined robust charm, just singing out Christmas all over...

The white frosting peeking out for a tinge of festive chill and cheer.

All tied up pretty ...

... and ready to jingle some bells!
Need more red?
